Verdine was born in Park Township, Holland, Michigan, the son of Verdine Gillette Sr. and Anna (Lund). He lived all of his life there. On Sept. 9, 1905, he married (1)Minnie Braun, and they were the parents of Gilletta, Gillette, and Earl. She passed away after giving birth to an infant who also died. He then married (2)Elsa (Zech, and their children were Paul and Majorie. He was a farmer, and also a deputy sheriff and constable serving Park Township for many years. Well known in the community, he enjoyed gun-collecting, hunting, and playing the violin. He passed away at Holland Hospital following complications of a broken leg and Alzheimers Disease, and is survived by his wife, Elsa; his daughters, Gilletta (William) Lawrence, and Majorie Gillette; his sons, Earl Gillette and Paul Gillette; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many other extended family members and friends. In addition to his first wife and infant son, he was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Gillette. "How Great Thou Art" was always his favorite hymn, and it is inscribed on his gravestone.
