A PIONEER GONE.

George Crawford, a pioneer, died of old age at LaPorte, yesterday, aged 88 -sic-. He filled a number prominent public positions, both here and elsewhere. In 1829 Gov. Cass, of Michigan, appointed him sheriff of Cass County. The establishment of the boundary between the states left him in Indiana, and he was appointed postmaster of Pulaski (now called Elkhart), and on the organization of Elkhart county he was appointed county surveyor and commissioner of the three percent fund. In 1832 he served one term in the Indiana legislature, and in 1836 was elected to senate for three years. In 1840 he was appointed by the war deparment secretary of a commission to hold a treaty with the united nation of Pottawatomies, Ottawas and Chippewa Indians at Council Bluffs. He came to this county in 1847. In 1856 he was elected to the legislature and served one term and in January, 1862 he was elected a member of the state board of agriculture, and served two years.

The illustration of his farm was found in LaPorte Co. IN Historical Atlas 1874, found by volunteer Cindy Hester - Thanks!
