Hans Joachim Heinrich "John" Qualmann was born in Hofzumfelde, Mecklenburg, Germany to Johann Jochim Friedrich "John" Qualmann and his first wife, Sophia Dorothea Maria Nuett, at Elmenhorst, Mecklendburg on December 4, 1846. Sophia was born March 25, 1823 in Hofzumfelede, Mecklenburg. The couple's first two children were Minnie and Hans (the subject of this memorial).

The father, Johann, worked as a day laborer. Sophia died August 19, 1850 in Hofzumfelde while giving birth to a stillborn child.

Johann married his second wife, Elisabeth Sophia Catharina Anna Maria Soltow, on October 1, 1851 in Kluetz, Mecklenburg. They had two children together in Mecklenburg: Johann and Christina.

Hans' father and step-mother, Johann and Elizabeth Qualmann, departed with Hamburg, Germany for America on November 2, 1853 with the four children, Minnie, Hans, Johann, and Christina. They sailed on the "Donau" from Hamburg (Hamburg-American Line).

The Donau was a 140 x 20 ft. ship and was less than five months old when the Qualmanns sailed on it. It was a square-masted sailing ship. During the Qualmann's voyage the Donau experienced a heavy gale from the westward, which resulted in split sails and other damage.

The Donau arrived at New York on December 10, 1853.

The Qualmann family settled in the Town of Rome, New York, where the father, Johann, worked as a farm hand.

The family moved to the Town of Ahnapee, Kewaunee County, Wisconsin in 1867.
