U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. After graduating from the University of Michigan, he taught school in Concord, Michigan, (1881-86). He served as the Jackson County Register of Deeds, (1886-97), studied law, admitted to the bar in 1895 and commenced the practice of law in Jackson, Michigan. In 1903, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-eighth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1911. He was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate in 1911 and served until 1923. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed in 1923, as a member of the International Joint Commission created to regulate the use of the boundary waters between the United States and Canada and served until his death.
