Born during the Civil War in Olmstead, Russellville, Kentucky, Ella moved as a small child to Tennessee. She married E.T. Hughes, of Simpson Co., Kentucky. They moved to Texas in a covered wagon in the 1880s with their first four children. They would eventually have 11 children total. Her husband was a Pinkerton Detective for the KATY Railroad, and later a detective for the Dallas Police Department. At the time of her death, Ella was survived by seven of her children, 36 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren, and 30 great-great grandchildren. Among her grandchildren were Sammie Lee, Ernestine and Betty Jane Tucker of The Tucker Sisters fame.
