Loretta Madson, age 94, formerly of Manitowoc and Egg Harbor, passed away peacefully at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006.

Loretta Emma Hartwig was born Sept. 21, 1912, to Edward Hartwig and Emma Jonas Hartwig in Denmark. She married Robert C. Madson on March 12, 1948, in Neenah. He preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 1997. Loretta graduated from Lincoln High School, Manitowoc, with the class of 1930. She then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she majored in political science and economics.

During World War II, she served three years in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Junior Grade. Upon discharge, she returned to the University of Wisconsin, where she enrolled in the School of Library Science and earned her certification as a grade one public librarian. Loretta was on the staff of the Manitowoc Public Library for 30 years. She retired in 1977 as the assistant director. Upon retirement, she and her husband established permanent residence at their home in Egg Harbor.

Loretta loved reading, traveling, antique collecting, watching televised collegiate sports (especially Badger games), and Green Bay Packer football. She also treasured her pet dogs, her flower gardens, and the wildflowers of Door County.

Loretta is survived by her two sons: Eric (Donna), Manitowoc, and Dirk, Egg Harbor; one granddaughter: Stacey Madson and fiance: Josh Reuss, Twin Cities, Minn.; one sister: Beulah (Boots) Heebink, Seattle, Wash., as well as nieces and nephews. She is further survived by her dear White Cliff Road neighbors, her caring church friends, and her kind library co-workers. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two brothers: Orville and Leland Hartwig.

Loretta was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Egg Harbor, where she assumed a leadership role in the annual antique show and sale for many years, and was active with the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and received recognition for being a member for 50 years.

Hansen Family Funeral and Cremation Services, Green Bay, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. Her body will be cremated and the ashes buried alongside those of her husband, Robert, at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.

Visitation will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church in Egg Harbor from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, with a memorial service to immediately follow. Memorials may be made in Loretta's name to the American Association of University Women, Calvary United Methodist Church or the Manitowoc Public Library.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Anna's House of New Franken, for their loving care of Loretta the past three-and-a-half years. In addition, the family wishes to thank all who remembered Loretta with their prayers, cards and visits. She was truly blessed with the friendship and support of her many dear friends and neighbors.
