Mrs. Newman was born September 21, 1925, in LaGrange, daughter of the late Frederick Finger Rowe and Lily Mae Middlebrooks Rowe. Her father was a long time Superintendent of the LaGrange City Schools. Mrs. Newman was an active, life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church of LaGrange. In addition to serving as an Elder in the Presbyterian Church, she served in various leadership capacities in the Women of the Church and the Council of Church Women. She was a 1946 graduate of Agnes Scott College in Decatur.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, John Rufus Newman.
Survivors include her daughter, Sue Ann Newman (Scott) Landa of LaGrange; two sons, Frederick Rufus (Katy Dobbs) Newman of West Redding, CT, and John Robert Newman of LaGrange; five grandchildren, Katherine Landa (Geoffrey) Frost of Marietta, Emily Landa (Randall) Levin of New York, NY, 1st Lt. J.S. Newman (Cindy) Landa of Jacksonville, NC, Lila Claire Newman of Chicago, IL, and Gil John Newman of West Redding, CT; a great-granddaughter, Emerson Claire Frost of Marietta; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Douglas DeCelle and Dr. William Conine officiating. A private burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
