FORMER CITY TREASURER IS DEAD
JOHN MAHNKE PASSES AWAY EARLY TODAY
End Came Peacefully As He Was In Sleep At Home After Month's Illness

John Mahnke, Sr., former city treasurer, poor commissioner and sealer of weights and measures, died early today at his home 1302 So. Eighth street, the end coming peacefully as he was in sleep. His death occurred at 7:30 and life passed with the calmness and quiet that characterized Mr. Mahnke's life, a serene, calm life that he had lived in Manitowoc since his birth 73 years.

Mr. Mahnke had been identified with public life in critical capacity for many years and up to a year ago served the city as city sealer retiring because of failing health. For five months he had been confined to his home, most of the time to his bed and his death was not unexpected, though a shock to family and friends.

Spent Entire Life Here.
Born in this city May 29, 1855 Mr. Mahnke had spent his life in Manitowoc and was a man who enjoyed the confidence and esteem of the community. He served as a member of the county board from the First Ward and was later elected city treasurer in which office he served for four terms, eight years. He was elected City Poor Commissioner and it was during his term of office that the Mother's Pension act was approved by the county board of operation, through his efforts largely, Mr. Mahnke appearing before the board in a plea for its adoption. His last service for the city was in the position of sealer of weights and measures from which he voluntarily retired when the duties became too arduous for his waning strength.

Mr. Mahnke was married May 29, 1880 to Elizabeth May Hein who preceded him in death five years ago.

He is survived by four sons, Frank and John of this city; Oscar of Racine; Eugene of Chicago and by one daughter, Mrs. Lester Lewis, of Los Angeles, Calif. Four grandchildren and a brother, Chas. of Sioux City, Iowa also survive.

For many years Mr. Mahnke was a trustee of the First Evangelical Lutheran church of which he was a member and was active in the affairs of the congregation.

Funeral on Friday.
Funeral services for Mr. Mahnke will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the First Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Koenninger officiating, with burial at Evergreen.

The passing of Mr. Mahnke will bring keen sorrow to the community which knew and admired him for his upright life and high character. He was widely known and universally esteemed.
