Grace (Bintz) Quackenbush was raised near Cortland, Nebraska. Her father died when she was two years old and her mother Anna subsequently married Samuel Jay Hartzell. Anna and Jay farmed near Cortland, their family comprised of Anna's two children by Ben Bintz, Jay's two surviving children by Hattie (Royer) Hartzell, and the five children born to them together. Grace graduated from Cortland High School in 1931 and after working for two years as a maid/nanny in Lincoln, entered the University of Nebraska using money left to her by her grandfather, John Bintz. Grace obtained her teacher's certificate in 1934 and returned to Cortland where she taught in a one-room country school until her marriage to Vern Quackenbush in 1936.
Following Vern's death in 1958, Grace moved with her two young sons to Lincoln, Nebraska, where she worked successively in a drugstore, a greenhouse, and a school kitchen in order to support her children. In 1964 she began work in the children's shoe department at a local department store, Miller & Paine, where she remained full time for almost 15 years. She continued working part-time well into her 70's. Grace also supported herself with two duplex houses she bought in the 1960's and managed for many years.
In her spare time, Grace enjoyed sewing, knitting and needlepoint. She was also an avid gardener, and always had beautiful roses. Grace remained physically active well into her 80's, walking her dog Coco a mile each morning in the neighborhood. In 2003 she sold her home of 44 years on Washington Street and moved to the Legacy Terrace in Lincoln, where she took advantage of the exercise room, frequent bridge games and well stocked library. Grace spent her final months at Milder Manor in south Lincoln.
