Enlistment Age-44

Enlisted: Sep 30,1864, Grands Rapids,MI

Mustered in Oct 1,1864, Michigan. Drummer

Mustered into Co "D" 3rd MI Infantry

Died of disease at Murfreesboro,TN.

I'm uncertain as to why Jirah Sherman has an enlistment age of 44 in 1864. He was born in 1804 and was much older. There are conflicts to whether is was born in Massachusetts or New York. He was the son of Reuben Sherman and Charity Mosher. He is named in the probate of his father in 1863 as Jirah Sherman of Montgomery, (Ionia County) Michigan. His wife, Jane Chapman Sherman applied for and received a pension for his service. In those records it's recorded that they were married October 6, 1825 in Summer Hill, Cayuga County, New York. His brother Reuben Sherman and wife Anne testified that they were present at the wedding. Also mentioned in the widow's pension is one daughter Ellen Sherman born April 26, 1852 as the only child under the age of 16 when he died. He and his wife Jane were the parents of the following known children: Diana, Freeman, Louisa, Norman, Truman, Andrew and Ellen.
Jirah and his family are enumerated in the following places: 1830 in Locke, Cayuga County, New York. 1840 in Homer Cortland County, New York. In 1850 and 1855 in Cortlandville, Cortland County, New York and in 1860 in Portland, Ionia County, Michigan.
