Funeral Services Will Be Held On Monday
Herman John Nehls, 61, operator of the old Schindler tavern, 819 Washington street, died this morning after an illness of only six days.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Pfeffer funeral home. Burial will be made in Evergreen cemetery. The body will lie at the funeral home from Sunday morning until the time of services.
Born in Germany on Dec. 27, 1874, Mr. Nehls came to the United States at the age of 29, one year after his marriage to Elizabeth Laudan??, who survives him. The couple settled in Milwaukee in 1903, where they spent two years. Leaving Milwaukee they settled on a farm near Chilton. The next ten years they spent in farming and operating a tavern and hotel in Chilton. Leaving Chilton they moved to Manitowoc and operated the fox farm south of the city for two more years. Since leaving the fox farm Mr. Nehls has operated the Washington street tavern. He also served as a deputy sheriff.
In Germany he served three years in the army. He is a member of the Freier Saengerbund here. The Saengerbund will take part in services at the funeral home Monday and will sing at the cemetery.
Survivors besides his widow include eight brothers and sisters, all in Germany.
