He married Maureen THORNTON on August 19, 1979, in South Bend, Indiana. She died in June 2001. Gene and Maureen had one son.
Gene graduated from Mishawaka High School and Indiana University. In the mid-1970s, he co-founded Heritage Construction. He later left the business to work alone and continued cabinet-making. He enjoyed antiques and historic home restoration, music, gardening, and canning pickles.
He was survived by his mother, brother, two sisters, son, and granddaughter.
