In 1930, Richard is living with his parents in Newark, New Jersey, where his father works as a manager. By 1940, the family has moved to Arcadia, Wayne County, New York and Richard has a little sister, Donna Jane.

Richard enlists in the US Navy on October 12, 1945 and is discharged August 12, 1946.

In 1950, Richard marries Joan McCallister in Cabell County, West Virginia.

At the time of his death, Richard was owner of The Emporium, a Wax and Wicker Works store and the former owner of two Hickory Farms stores in Raleigh and Greensboro.
