Thomas was the son of Oliver Perry & Jane A. (Hughes) Abington.

He married Ida May Butler in Ralls Co, MO on November 3, 1892. Their children were: Ida May Butler (1869 – 1918), Edward Maurice Cyril (1896 – 1968), Gladys F (1898 – 1985), & Oliver Butler (1900 – 1988).

On April 27, 1910, Thomas, age 45, & Ida, age 40, lived on a farm in Jasper, Ralls Co, MO. A Black man, Arch King, age 21, who lived with them, was hired to help on the farm. Ida had given birth to four children, all of whom were still living:
Grace W. (16), Morris C. (13), Gladys F. (12), & Oliver B. (10).

They later moved to Audrain Co, MO where Ida died in 1918.

On January 5, 1920, Thomas, age 53, lived on a farm with his four children: Maurice, Grace W., Gladys F., & Butler O.
