John Weir Knox Macfarlane was born Sept 19, 1936 to Walter Knox Macfarlane and Norah Gourley Weir. He died Feb 3 2010 in Mangawhai, New Zealand and is buried in Tara Cemetery, Mangawhai.
Letter from JWK dated 30 May 1998..."In total, I have been 45 years at Sea. I commenced my basic Navy Training in May, 1952, when I joined 'H.M.S. Conway' a 19th Century, wooden hulled, square rigged, Sailing Ship, then in 1954, I joined my first Merchant Ship, a 1936 built steam powered Tramp Steamer, names 'S.S. Beaconsfield,' followed by service in a succession of British Flag vessels until 1967, Then I emigrated to New Zealand, and on arrival in New Zealand, obtained a job with the Auckland Harbour Board, where I worked in various capacities up until 1971. In 1971, I returned to Sea in New Zealand on registered vessels, remaining at sea in New Zealand Ships up to 1989. In 1990, I obtained a Contract with the 'Gold Star Line of Hong Kong,' working there until May, 1996. My last Contract was with a Company based in London, and from July 1996 until June 1997, I was in Command of M/V Corto. I signed off the M/V Corto at Curacao, Nederland Antilles, following the sale of the vessel to a Peruvian Shipping Company. During my period of employment with 'The Shipping Corporation of New Zealand' from May 1974 to November 1989, I was promoted from Chief Officer to Master in December 1975, my first Command being to the M/V Toa Moana, a small 3,000 ton Deadweight General cargo/Freezer Ship trading from New Zealand to the Cook Island, Nine Island, Samoa, Tonga, New Caledonia and Fiji, when I was on the Cook Islands trade I brought many cargoes of Bananas back to Auckland. Later I sailed as Master in Command of three other Ships of the same type and size, also for four years on a 9,000 ton coastal Roll on/Roll off ship trading from Auckland to Lyttleton and Dunedin and return, then for the years 1984-1989 with the Shipping Corporation on 12,000 ton Ships with 40 tons cranes and stern quarter ramps. The Shipping Corporation was sold by the New Zealand Government in 1989. After 1989, I sailed on long term Contracts with 'Gold Star Line' of Hong Kong, sailing as Master on five different multi purpose vessels. We are enjoying our Mandarin Orchard and I have felt no real desire to return to Seafaring."
In 2005, John and his wife visited in Kansas and he had numerous "Sea Stories" to tell. He was an amazing man!
