Eldest son of Lt. Col. James Marcus "Mark" Prevost and Theodosia Bartow, married to 1) Euphemia Hunt and 2) Prudence Lockwood. He had six daughters from his first marriage, and three daughters and a son from his second marriage.
After the death of his father, Theodosia Bartow Prevost married Aaron Burr, Attorney General of New York and later Vice President under Thomas Jefferson. Aaron Burr is perhaps most known as the man who killed Alexander Hamilton in an 1804 duel.
An 1804 letter from Burr to his son-in-law, Joseph Alston, gives an idea of the high regard Burr had for his stepson. "The elder Prevost, Augustine James Frederick Prevost, is a most amiable and honorable man," Burr wrote. "Under the garb of coarse rusticity you will find, if you know him, refinement, wit, a delicate sense of propriety, the most inflexible intrepidity, incorruptible integrity and disinterestedness. I wish you could know him; but it would be difficult, by reason of his diffidence and great reluctance to mingle with the world. It has been a source of extreme regret and mortification to me that he should be lost to society and to his friends. The case seems almost remediless, for, alas! he is married!"
In 1834, Prevost and his family moved from Westford, New York to Morgan County. They settled on a 240-acre farm and lived in a log cabin just south of present-day Concord.∼Augustine was the stepson of Aaron Burr. According to the article in The Jacksonville Journal Courier, "he was originally buried in the old College cemetery, but was later moved to Diamond Grove." The article does not indicate when his body was re-interred.
