Washington's Confederate service and burial records show his name as W. Newsom, W.H. Newsom, and Wn. Newsom. Unfortunately, these records have been misinterpreted and Wash's service record is often listed under "William H. Newsom" There is an old tradition in the family that he changed his name in the war because he had a brother fighting for the Union. However, I feel that transcribers of his records took some artistic freedom when labeling him as "William", and as a result, his name appears this way in several rosters, including "North Carolina Troops: A Roster" and the official roster of the US Parks Service. Washington Newsom was from Forsyth Co., NC.
