John Gregory "Greg" Lane was the 2nd child of David Lee Lane & Shirley Mae (Freeman) Lane. He grew up playing baseball & football. He was above avg. in school & always had a huge smile on his face.
At 18 he joined the 82nd Airborne (PATHFINDERS)& excelled in the service. He loved the Army but was home sick for his new wife & baby son. He hung in there & made it to graduate boot (Anniston, Alabama)as well as jump school @ Ft. Benning, Ga.
On April 4th, 1985 Our family stood out on a dusty field & watched as each & everyone of those guys & gals jumped out of those C-130's. Never have I seen something as exciting & beautiful. It was an amazing day & I will never forget it!
Not 24 hrs later, my mom got a call from a hospital in Greensboro, Ga. & all I can remember was my tiny mother falling apart. We found out Greg & his wife, along with 2 Army buddies were in a very serious car accident.
Greg was the only one killed. Kim his wife & one of the friends walked away unscathed. The other friend was pretty seriously injured & in a coma. We found out yrs later, that friend did in fact survive & from what we had been told, came out of it fine.
Greg was an awesome guy. He was my mentor, A hero, a teacher & the one who taught me who Ted Nugent, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, ZZ Top, Van Halen etc was all about. Ya can't get better than that.
Greg will forever be missed & not a day his absence hasn't been felt in my life. I know we are all given what we are given & that's that. But it just makes me wonder, Why do the good ones always die so young. He was just getting started in life & had so much to look forward to. Almost seems unfair & cruel but I know God has his reasons & that's enough assurance for me.
