Private George Brown No-5658 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment.

George Brown was born in Ropley Hampshire in 1883. In 1906 he was working as a farm labourer when he met Ada Lansley. They married in Avington Hampshire in 1906. His only daughter Dora Constance Brown was born in Avington in 1907. In the 1911 census George can be found with his wife Ada and daughter Constance living at Larkwhistle Farm, between Micheldever and East Stratton Hampshire. George joined the 1st BTN Hampshire regiment in 1914 and went to war. He was killed in Action at hill 60 Flanders Fields on 29 April 1915. George was shot in the chest. The bullet went straight through his wallet in his tunic pocket. His wallet and medals can be found on display at the Hampshire Regiment Museum in Serles House Winchester. At the time of his death his wife Ada was pregnant with their 2nd child. Charles George Brown was born 21 August 1915, 4 months after his fathers death. George Brown has no known grave but there is a memorial to him at the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium. He is also remembered on the War Memorials at East Stratton and Micheldever Hampshire.
