A. Elmer Crowell Noted Wood Carver, Dies in E. Harwich

East Harwich - Anthony Elmer Crowell, 89, world famous wood carver, whose bird masterpieces are displayed in museums of America and Europe, died yesterday at his home on Main Street.

A native of Harwich, Mr. Crowell was a sailor and cranberry grower when he began carving wooden duck decoys as a pastime. The fidelity and beauty of his decoys attracted friends to buy them and eventually won the attention of sportsmen. He then developed a thriving business supplying decoys to hunting clubs.

Bird groups carved by Mr. Crowell are exhibited at Harvard University,
Buffalo Museum, Ford Museum at Dearborn, Mich., and at several New York and Long Island museums, as well as institutions in Canada, England, France, Germany and Italy.

He leaves a son, Cleon S. Crowell of Harwichport.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday at the Doane and Beal Funeral Chapel in Harwichport.
