"Gerald", as James was known, was the only child of James Governor Mackey and his wife Mayme Stilwell. He attended Roxbury High School, Blair Academy, Colgate University, and Ithaca College. On June 22, 1931, the same night of her graduation from High School, Gerald married Marion A. Truby, at her home in Prattsville, NY. Her father, Rev. Mack Truby, officiated. (See the 6/25/1931 Stamford Mirror.) After Gerald and Marion were married, they lived in Ithaca, so Gerald could finish his senior year at college. After graduating, Gerald was a "Professor of Physical Education". He was the Physical Education director and a coach at Windham High School. Gerald and Marion had two sons: James G. and Roger Mackey.
