George W. DeWolfe was a son of Winthrop Jeremiah and Hepzibah Anderson DeWolfe of the Old Lyme, Connecticut area. September 25, 1867 he married Philena (Lena) Augusta Champion in Black Hall, Connecticut. Lena was the oldest of 15 children born to Calvin B. and Ann Slate Champion. George and Lena became the adoptive parents of Joseph C. DeWolfe, born August 1882. George DeWolfe passed away at the age of 90 after a life of successful business endeavors as well as active participation in service of the Town, the First Congregational Church, and the Old Lyme Cemetery Association. He was the lineal descendant of Balthazar DeWolf, one of the original settlers of the town.
