OBITUARY

Mary Margaret Gussett EWERT, born March 15, 1911 in Corpus Christi, to Horatio D. Columbus GUSSET and Mary Henrietta Barnard GUSSETT, died on February 20, 2004 in Austin, Texas shortly before her ninety-third birthday. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Dr. William Arthur EWERT (1985), and her brother, Norwick Bernard GUSSETT (2003, at the age of 103 years). She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law.

Mary Margaret's father, Horatio, was the son of prosperous rancher and businessman Norwick GUSSETT. His family settled west of what is now Corpus Christi, and the Gussettville Cemetery still exists on the Nueces River in Live Oak/San Patricio County. Norwick GUSSETT challenged vested interests in 1800's Corpus Christi by opening port facilities on what is now called North Beach or Corpus Christi Beach.

Mary Margaret led a varied and interesting life in South Texas, serving as secretary for the President of Texas A&I in the 1930's, enjoying a long-time friendship with eventual President Lyndon B. Johnson, working as a lifelong Democrat and marrying a handsome young doctor in 1940. She served as Chairperson of City Zoning and Planning, President of the local Red Cross, an officer in the Zonta Club, and a sponsor of Delta Theta Sorority (later ZTA). Mary Margaret was an avid member of the Episcopal Church and served on the committee to build the new Epiphany Episcopal Church. She was active in the Garden Club, St. Anne's Guild, and the Women's Club. Mary Margaret was described by those who knew her as a ready and concerned friend to all whom she encountered.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2004 at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary. Services will be held at Church of the Epiphany Episcopal Church at Third and Yoakum, Kingsville on Wednesday, February 25, 2004. Graveside services will follow at Chamberlain Cemetery in Kingsville. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2004 at St. Stephen's Episcopal School Chapel in Austin, TX.
