Survivors are his wife of 50 years, Alma Kathryn Key Youngblood of Brunswick, a grandson, Josh Noble of Brunswick; a brother, Julious Marvin Thomas (wife Dorothy A. Johns) of Brunswick; three sisters, Nancy Clara Y. Knowles of Cox Creek, Kentucky, Ola Olena Y. Holliday (husband Charles Robert) of Abita Springs, Louisiana, and Wanda Faye Y. Mangum (husband Gary) of Memphis, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Youngblood was employed with J. A. Jones Construction Co. as a burner in the Brunswick Shipyard during WWII building Liberty Ships. He later served in the U. S. Army in Germany and Korea. He was employed with Babcock and Wilcox Boiler Company in Brunswick for several years before it closed. For the last several years he owned and operated Youngblood Welding Shop in Brunswick.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 A. M., Wednesday, August 9, 2006 in the chapel of Sims Funeral Home in Douglas with Rev. Donnie Kirkland (cousin) officiating, assisted by Rev. Howard Bagley (nephew). Burial was at Saginaw Baptist Church Cemetery near Nicholls.
Soloist Liz Kirkland sang “Serenaded by Angels,” and “Amazing Grace,” with Lois Mills, pianist. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at Sims Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Bobby Cave, Howard Bagley, James Fuller, Leslie Thomas, Daniel “Boone” Kirkland, and Billy Walker. Honorary pallbearers were James Chesser, Vernon Copeland, Leon Wilson, Charles Lynn, Dr. Malcolm Wright, and former employees of Babcock & Wilcox.
Sims Funeral Home of Douglas was in charge of arrangements.
Addition: J. L. married Erma Mae “Dutch” Woods in 1944 and they had one daughter, Annette, born February 1945. We heard that Dutch married J. L. Wood later and had other children. The last time we saw Annette she was a teenager.
Dutch’s mother was Lavada “Vade” Bagley, sister of Joey who was married to J. L.’s sister, Nancy. At one time Vade lived in Live Oak, Florida.
