H. J. Bestul, long a prominent citizen of Northfield Community, died Saturday morning, Sept. 1, 1962, at Northfield Hospital as the result of a heart condition. The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at St. John's Lutheran church where Mr. Bestul was a member. The Rev. Boral Biorn officiated. Interment was at Oaklawn cemetery. Plans for the funeral were made by the Anderson Funeral Home. Helmer Julius Bestul was born March 12, 1888, near Dennison, the son of Jacob R. and Anna Bestul. He spent his boyhood in the Dennison and Northfield areas. He was graduated from Northfield High School and St. Olaf College and took graduate work at Columbia University, New York. Entering the field of teaching and coaching, he was a member of the Bemidji school faculty, then was at Billings, Mont., until entering the armed forces in 1917. He received his honorable discharge with the rank of lieutenant in 1919 and returned to the school field. He served as superintendent of schools at Forestburg, Edgemont, Spencer and Volgas, S.D. He was married on June 16, 1920, at Howard, S.D., to Adele B. Bakke. In 1933, Mr. Bestul and his family came to Northfield where he engaged in dairy farming until 1956. He then retired and lived in Northfield until his death. Mr. Bestul was one of the organizers of the Northfield Community Fire association and served as the group's president for several years. Until the time of his death, he was a member and participant of many civic and community activities. He is survived by his wife; one son, Dr. Alden B. Bestul who is at present engaged in research work at Strasbourg, France; one daughter, Mrs. Eugene Schrader (Joyce Elaine) of Northfield Community; nine grandchildren; three sisters, Miss Emma Bestul of Red Wing, Mrs. Anna Williams of Beverly HIlls, Calif., and Miss Ida Bestul of St. Paul. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.
