Jean Baptist Demoulin was born June 10, 1828 in Beaufort, Luxembourg. Demoulin meaning - "Of the Mill or Miller". Jean Baptiste Demoulin changed his French first name Jean to John and tried to change the surname Demoulin phonetically. He dropped the "o" and in an attempt to keep the French nasal, added a "g" at the end.
He was a weaver in Luxembourg. After he came to America he learned the molder's trade; then went into business for himself as a grocer, liquour dealer, and restaurateur.
He came to USA (Erie, Pa) in 1852. Passport dated March 2, 1852 at Bettel (in French), traveled First Class. Key to his character--- nothing but the best.
His first grocery and liquor store (a combination of restaurant and saloon) was on East Eleventh Street between Parade and Wallace sometime between 1855 and 1859. Later he bought property on 12th Street between State and Peach and on Peach Street between 12th and 13th Streets.

Lee surrendered shortly thereafter. John Baptist Demuling became ill in camp and was sent to Columbian General Hospital in Washington, D.C., whence he was discharged on June 14, 1865. His health recovered and was a prominent GAR man (Grand Army of the Republic) and attended all the conventions for years after the War.
