*** Major Carter was a member of Advisory Team 22, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. On April 24, 1972, he was at Tanh Canh Base Camp near Dak To, Kontum Province when the camp was overrun by the Viet Cong. He was extracted by a helicopter that was shot down and burned. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.

I am still checking to see if I have a photo of this area between Dak To and Ben Het to the west...but there was an intermittent island at this grid. Was around here quite a bit,,, George replaced me in late January and I always wonder if the dates were slipped a bit. We also keep up with him because he was cadre for the Officer Candidate School I was commissioned through.

The helicopter departed to the northwest from Dak To, but was apparently hit by enemy fire, as it crashed and burned on a small island in the Dak Poko River about 500 meters from the end of the dock to the runway. Because of the rolling terrain, personnel at the airfield did not see the aircraft impact.
A pilot flying over the wreckage reported that the helicopter was burning, but they could see no survivors. It was later discovered that five people did survive the crash - Warmath, Keller, Vogle, Ward and Lea.
According to their statements, Hunsicker, Ellen, Zollicoffer, Jones and Maj. George Carter were all dead.
Of the Americans involved, seven were unrecovered - five known dead in the UH-1H crash, two missing in action:
