*** Major Carter was a member of Advisory Team 22, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. You may be gone, no longer living on this earth; but you will live on - in the memories of your family and friends. There will always be a part of you living in me, your brother, sisters and those who knew you and loved you. You will live on because we remember you!

***** Hi Eddie. I added a new map to Carter's Memorial. The VHPA puts the crash site at ZB 001219 as I marked on a copy of my (personal) mapsheet. I am still checking to see if I have a photo of this area between Dak To and Ben Het to the west...but there was an intermittent island at this grid. Was around here quite a bit,,, George replaced me in late January and I always wonder if the dates were slipped a bit. We also keep up with him because he was cadre for the Officer Candidate School I was commissioned through.
Regards Hugh Preacher

***** His name appears on Panel 1W, Row 5 at the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington DC, and at the Central Florida Veterans Memorial Wall at the Orlando VA Hospital, Lake Nona.

G. Warmath; John P. Keller; Walter H. Ward (helicopter passengers, rescued); Charles W. Gordon, Cao Ky Chi (evaded capture near Dak To)

A UH-1H Huey from the 57th Assault Helicopter Company, 52nd Avn Bn, extracted several of the advisors, taking off with ten men aboard:

1LT James Edward Hunsicker, pilot, 57th AHC
WO1 Wade Lynn Ellen, copilot, 57th AHC
SP4 Charles M. Lea, aircrewman, 57th AHC

SP4 Franklin Zollicoffer, passenger, USARV Flight Detachment

Team 22 Advisors Maj. George W. Carter, Maj. Julius G. Warmath, and Capt. John P. Keller, were extracted by helicopter.

The helicopter departed to the northwest from Dak To, but was apparently hit by enemy fire, as it crashed and burned on a small island in the Dak Poko River about 500 meters from the end of the dock to the runway. Because of the rolling terrain, personnel at the airfield did not see the aircraft impact.

A pilot flying over the wreckage reported that the helicopter was burning, but they could see no survivors. It was later discovered that five people did survive the crash - Warmath, Keller, Vogle, Ward and Lea.

According to their statements, Hunsicker, Ellen, Zollicoffer, Jones and Maj. George Carter were all dead.

Of the Americans involved, seven were unrecovered - five known dead in the UH-1H crash, two missing in action:

LTC Robert W. Brownlee, MIA
CPT Kenneth J. Yonan, MIA
1LT James Edward Hunsicker, KIA UH-1H
