Chapman answered President Lincoln’s last call for soldiers and enlisted in Company C, One Hundred and Thirty-seventh Illinois Infantry. After the Chicago fire in 1871, Chapman went into the bricklayer business, which was in high demand, and became very successful. He later went into the hotel business and did quite well until the financial panic of 1893, when his business was crippled. Chapman and his family moved to Covina, California in 1894 where he became involved in every local enterprise inaugurated by its people and was highly regarded as one of the most substantial and highly respected citizens of the community.
