Coroner Mark Miller said Orlando Bell, 52 and his wife, Alma, 51, had been dead about four days. Their bodies were discovered by a neighbor boy.
Miller said a .22 caliber rifle found near Bell's body was believed to be the death weapon. Bell had been shot once in the head. His wife's crumpled body was about 15 feet away from the rifle.
Bell was a retired Wabash railroad employee. He and his wife moved to Brownstown from Decatur about 14 months ago.
Sheriff Ralph Cripe said an inquest had been set for Aug 14 in Vandalia.
