During World War II (WWII), he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Air Forces' First Motion Picture Unit, directing training films and documentaries. In 1992, he received the Golden Boot Award for his longtime contributions to Westerns. Sturges has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to film, located at 6511 Hollywood Blvd.
