Walter was the third child born to Lars and Ida Schon. He attended rural elementary school and graduated from Fertile High School. In 1936-37, he started working at the creamery in Rindahl, Minnesota and on September 10, 1938, he married Doris Stardig of McIntosh.
Walter and Doris moved to Fosston and Walter began working at the Fosston Creamery (Fosston Cooperative Association) where he was manager for many years, later becoming manager of the Land O Lakes milk drying plant.
He served on the Fosston School Board for two terms, was president of the Minnesota Creamery Operators Association and worked with many other dairy related associations such as 4-H, Thief River Falls "Dairy Days" etc. He was a member of Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston for many years, where he was a both a deacon and trustee, later joining Calvary Free Lutheran Church, where he was an active member until his death, serving on many boards and committees. He was on the Board of Regents for Oak Grove Lutheran High School in Fargo, N.D. for ten years during the 1960s and a past member of the Fosston Rotary Club.
In 1982, after 45 years, he retired from the creamery business. Walter enjoyed his work and was well respected for his positive relationship with his board of directors and for his caring attitude toward his employees.
Survivors include two children, Byron Schon of Grand Forks, N.D., and Marbeth Schon-Tilden (Andrew Tilden) of Natchez, Miss.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Schon; and sister-in-law, Louise Schon and several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris Schon; his brothers, Leonard and Arvid Schon; and his sister Annie Hanson.
