Blanco County News (TX) - November 30, 2011
I am writing my own obituary to share with you the wonderful life I have lived. I was born February 13, 1923, on the Weaver Ranch outside Rocksprings, Texas. My older brother, Dermott (Bubber) and my younger sister, Nancy, and I lived a very good life in abundance until the Great Depression came and wiped our family out. In 1944 I left Rocksprings and entered San Marcos College to receive my nursing credentials. While my two good friends and I walked on the sidewalk in San Marcos, we encountered three uniformed military men walking by… one of them (Chuck Bonham) said to his friend, "I am going to marry that girl". Well… it happened… we got married and I became an officer's wife. Almost immediately we began to have children. Our firstborn was Charles William Bonham, Jr. (Bill); then came Nancy (Sugar) and later Celeste (Ginger). Our family traveled throughout the Pacific Ocean islands over the next 15 years (Japan, Guam, Hawaii and the Philippines) until we became stationed in Southern California. After Chuck's retirement from the Air Force in 1963, we later moved back to Rocksprings where I became County Commissioner and Chuck became Mayor. Well, the politics of a small Texas town were very difficult and tested us and especially for a woman as County Commissioner… the 'ol boys just did not accept it.
Well, now I am here in my last days wanting to thank everyone for the friendships, laughter and challenges in my life. I was very fortunate to have had so many wonderful friends and a great family.
I am survived by my three children; Bill of Wimberley, TX, Nancy (Sugar) of Oakland, TN, and Celeste (Ginger) of Fredericksburg, TX, my sisters Barney Lou of Evant, TX, and Tommy Sue of Commanchi, TX, my grandson John Lee (wife Sara), and my wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews. Thank you to all for making my journey a truly wonderful and enriched life. I also want to thank Marie for being the angel who took care of me and became a friend.
