Well known EMS instructor. Taught many Emergency Medical Technicians in the Columbus area. Gave his time freely for many years to the fire service and Boy Scouts.

Wife, Mary Sweetland-Smathers; stepmother, Ila; children, Eddie (Robin), Tom (Marcia), and Sandy Waller; grandchildren, Takia, Leslie (Derek), Phillip, Elijah, Trevor, Kaitlin, and Bailey; great grandchildren, Alexia and Haylea; siblings, Billy (Patti), Jeanie (Dave) Walton, and Charlotte (Dave) Kinsinger; special niece and nephews, Janet (Bob) Tuthill, Tim (Cindy) Irwin, and Bill (Connie) Henson; sister-in-law, Margaret Berryman. Also left behind is his extended family that he loved as his own, Bill and Kay Hoskins, Tim Brewer, Janine Browning, Reese Keeney, Andy McClure, and Stacy Ross. Preceding him to heaven is his parents Shug and Abby Smathers, son-in-law Earl Waller, brother-in-law Dale Berryman. As a volunteer, he served 36 years as a paramedic and instructor to numerous local fire departments, the last of which being Thurston Fire Department. He was also active within the Simon Kenton Council and the Order of the Arrow for the Boy Scouts of America for 30 years...
