Lt. Derflinger Loses His Life In Plane Crash
Lt. Floyd L. Derflinger, Jr., 22, plunged to his death In the Gulf of Mexico last night night between 9 and 10 o'clock, while on a routine night flight out of the U. S. Army Air Base at Venice, Fla., and while flying a P-51 (Mustang) plane. This word was contained in a telegram received by the young fighter pilot's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Lee Derflinger, Sr., of Reliance, Saturday afternoon. The telegram added that the body had not been recovered at the time of sending the wire.
Last June 7, first Lt. J. Rolfe Derflinger, an older brother, also a U. S. Army pilot, who was a flight instructor at Columbia, S. C., died when his training plane crashed near that South Carolina city.
Lt. Floyd L. Derflinger, Jr., had completed his training some months ago, and had been eligible for combat duty, but had been held back as an instructor at Venice, Fla.
Born in September, 1922, he graduated from Warren County High School in Front Royal in 1940. From then until February, 1942, he assisted his father in farming at Reliance. He had taken pre-flight courses at the Winchester Municipal Airport before entering the active service. After enlisting in the air corps, he trained at Miami, Fla. and Cincinnati, Ohio, where he received his wings: and at San Antonio, Texas, as a fighter pilot. He was serving as an instructor at Venice, Fla., and also was engaged in doing a secret, new type of flying, which is said to be quite dangerous. He had not been permitted to inform his parents or friends of the exact type of flying in which he was engaged lately. He did state that for some months he had asked for overseas combat duty, but thus far had not been so assigned.
Lt. Derflinger married Miss Cecilia Phalen, of Strasburg, who has been with her husband in Florida. A small daughter, Sharon Lee, also survives, as do the voung airman's parents, also a brother and sister, Kidwell Grey, better known as "Jack,' and Ruth Jean, both at home.
Mrs. Derflinger, mother of the lost pilot, had just returned from a visit to her son when the message was received of his untimely death while In line of duty. The young man had a host of friends around Reliance, Front Royal and the southern part of Frederick county.
