Joseph Hoyle was a teacher in Cleveland County, North Carolina, but his career was ended by war.

He served in the Confederate States Army in Company F, 55th Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to Full Sergeant on 25 November 1863. He was promoted to full 1st Lieutenant on 11 Mar 1863. Joseph Hoyle died from wounds on 1 September 1864 at Richmond, Virginia.

His letters to his wife Sarah have been published in a compilation by Jeffery M. Girvan: "Deliver Us From This Cruel War".
