Chicago Driver Strikes Stalled Car on Highway
Manitowoc Man Was Trying to Get It Off Road
TWO RIVERS—A prominent Manitowoc man was fatally injured Tuesday when an automobile struck his stalled vehicle on Highway 42 about seven miles north of this city.
The victim was Alfred W. Nelson, 63, 712 N. Seventh St., vice president and assistant treasurer of the Plumb & Nelson Co., wholesale grocery distributor. He died at Two Rivers Municipal Hospital at 1:25 a.m. Wednesday of injuries received in the accident.
Three occupants of the other car were hospitalized here. They were Aloysius B. Kalas, 58, of 3056 N. Kenneth Ave., Chicago, the driver, and his two unmarried sisters, Julia, 69, and Bertha, 70. Kalas suffered injuries to both eyes, a fractured right wrist and forehead laceration. Julia had a fractured nose and multiple bruises while Bertha received a fractured right leg and multiple bruises.
Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, attributed Nelson's death to a cerebral hemorrhage resulting from a skull fracture. He indicated there would be an inquest into the accident. Nelson was the 13th person to die in a county traffic accident so far in 1960 compared with 10 for the entire year of 1959.
Car Developed Trouble
County traffic police reported that Nelson was traveling south on Highway 42 when his car developed trouble shortly before 3 p.m. on a straight stretch about 1 1/2 miles north of the S-curve.
Nelson had attempted to push the car in the west traffic lane and was standing next to it when Kalas approached from the north. Kalas ran into the left rear section of the Nelson car which swung around and knocked the driver to the pavement.
The Nelson vehicle continued into the west ditch but Kalas managed to stop his car on the highway next to the Manitowoc man's body, according to police.
Police were able to question Kalas only briefly because of his injuries. He told officers that he did not notice the Nelson car in the traffic lane until it was too late.
It was not immediately known what caused the Nelson car to stall. A young girl who lives at a nearby farm said the driver seemed to have trouble keeping the motor going before it stopped in the roadway. She added that Nelson briefly attempted to push the car before the collision occurred.
Native of Manitowoc
Kalas and his sisters reportedly were on their way to Two Rivers to close a deal for the purchase of a store at Two Creeks. They had planned to move to that community from Chicago.
Nelson was born Oct. 10, 1896, in Manitowoc, son of the late William and Floy Felton Nelson, and attended public schools in the city, graduating from the old West Side High School. He entered the armed forces in World War 1 and was stationed in the east. After his return to Manitowoc he went to work for the Plumb and Nelson firm where he had been associated for 46 years. He was vice president and assistant treasurer of the firm at his death, a position he held for many years. He married the former Iris Edwards at Whitewater June 26, 1937.
He was active in many church and civic organizations. An active member of the St. James Episcopal church, he sang in the choir for 25 years, was church treasurer for 11 years, treasurer of the church diocesan pension fund for 25 years and for a number of years was a member of the church vestry.

He was divisional manager of Eastern Wisconsin Clover Farm Stores, member of Wisconsin Independent Grocers Assn, director of Wholesale Grocers Assn., member of Manitowoc County Fish and Game Protective Assn., a member 42 years of the American Legion Drews-Bleser Post No. 88, Manitowoc County Historical Society, member of the Elks Lodge No. 687 for 41 years during which time he had worked his way up through most of the lodge offices; a member of Meistersingers of Two Rivers and part owner and secretary-treasurer of Lincoln Fields Golf Course, Manitowoc. He was also one of the first members and held office in the Masquers, Manitowoc amateur theatrical group. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. James Episcopal Church. The Rev. William Harvey will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife; a son, William, at home; and a sister, Mrs. Edward Selzer of Paris, France.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday at Jens Funeral Home until 10:30 a.m. Friday when the body will be moved to the church. The American Legion will conduct flag rites at graveside.
