Mrs. Katherine Nelson, 76, of 411 State St., Manitowoc, died Wednesday evening upon arrival at Memorial Hospital following a cerebral hemorrhage at home. She was the widow of George Nelson, a former partner in Plumb and Nelson Co., Manitowoc wholesale grocery firm.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jens Funeral Home, Manitowoc. Christian Science services will be conducted by G. Theodore Bach of Sheboygan, reader. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Mrs. Nelson was born Nov. 12, 1883, at Toledo, Ohio, daughter of the late William and Mary L. Vande Grift. She came to Manitowoc with her parents when she was 14 and in 1907 was married to Mr. Nelson. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Miller Schmitz of Wauwatosa; a brother, William Vande Grift of Manitowoc; and three grandchildren.(sic) A daughter, Shirley, died in 1958.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Friday.

George W. Nelson and Miss Catherine Vandergrift Married in Appleton


Wedded at Appleton a week ago, George W. Nelson and Miss Catherine Vandergrift, North side young people, have just made the announcement to friends and congratulations are being showered upon the pair. The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. Father Cox of All Saints Episcopal Church, Thursday, June 27 when the two visited Appleton for the day and immediately after the wedding the couple returned here and the event has been a secret until today when made public.

Mr. and Mrs. Nelson will continue their residence in this city, Mr. Nelson being associated with his father who is a member of the firm of Plumb & Nelson. Mrs. Nelson is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Vandergrift and one of the city's social favorites. The marriage is the outgrowth of an attachment of school days and will afford pleasure to a large circle of friends. Mrs. Nelson will accompany her parents for a month's stay in Indiana before the young couple establish a home.
