Albert M. "Al" Kovnesky, 87, Lake Mills, former Coleman resident,
died on Thursday, April 10, at Fort Memorial Hospital in Fort Atkinson.
Born on Oct. 1, 1920 in Coleman, son of the late Mike and Augusta (Kobus) Kovnesky, Polish immigrants, he grew up on a farm, the 9th of 10 children. He graduated from Oconto Grade School in 1934. He married the former Florence Marie Zaleski of Milwaukee on Jan. 6, 1951 in Coleman and she preceded him in death on Dec. 14, 2005.
A World War II veteran, he served in the United States Coast Guard from 1942 to 1946. He was assigned to the LST 20 and participated in 7 D-Day invasions of the Pacific Islands, including Tarawa, Marshal and the Philippine Islands. He spent 32 months at sea.
He was a resident of Lake Mills since 1953, moving from Milwaukee. He owned and operated Machine Weld Service in Lake Mills until his retirement in 1989. He had been Constable for the Town of Lake Mills from 1963 to 1995 and started the Rock Lake Safety Patrol, was a deputy and undersheriff for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department and served on the Jefferson County Board of Supervisors for District #15 for two terms. His taking no-nonsense approach won him respect.
Survivors include his children, Mrs. Louis (Barbara) Mangold of Milwaukee, Michael (Magdalena) Toman of Claude, Tex. and Rodney (Ann) Kovnesky of Fort Atkinson; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. August (Edna) Borkowski of Pound and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends and a few people he's thrown in jail.
Private family burial services were held at St. Adalbert Catholic Cemetery in Milwaukee. Funeral services were held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Fort Atkinson on Tuesday, April 15 at at 10 a.m.
