Private, Company A, 73rd Pennsylvania Infantry under the command of Colonel's John A. Koltes, G.A. Muchleck, William Moore & Charles C. Cresson; Lt Colonel Michael A. Strong and Major's Leopold Schott, David A. Schultz & Christian H. Goebel.

He was born in Menz, Germany to Gertrudis Ibig & Josephi Philippi Buettel and when he was a young boy, he and his parents emigrated to the United States, settling in Iowa. He enlisted in the Union Army on August 27, 1862 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was mustered in his company that same day. He fought in the following battles; Cross Keys (June 8, 1862), Cedar Mountain (August 9, 1862), Bull Run (August 30, 1862), Fredericksburg (December 9 - 16,
1862), Chancellorsville (May 1- 5,1863), Gettysburg (July 1 -3, 1863), Wauhatchie (October 25 - 29, 1863), Chattanooga - Ringgold Campaign (November 23 - 27, 1863), Rocky Faced Ridge (May 5 - 11, 1864), Resaca (May 14 - 15, 1864), New Hope Church (May 25, 1864), New Hope Church, Dallas & Allatoona Hills (May 26 - June 5, 1864),Marietta (June 10 - July 2, 1864), Peach Tree Creek (July 19 - 20, 1864), Siege of Atlanta (July 22 - August 25, 1864), Averysboro (March 16, 1865)& Bentonville (March 19 - 21, 1865); Battle of Goldsboro (March 24, 1865); Advance & Occupation of Raleigh (April 9-14, 1865) & Bennett's House and Surrender of CSA General Joseph Eggleston Johnston and his army (April 26, 1865). The infantry mustered out on July 14, 1865 at Washington, D.C. After his discharge, he returned to Pennsylvania, then returned back to Iowa to farm.

Then, in 1869, he crossed the plains to California, settling in Los Angeles County, where he met and married Christianna (maiden name unknown) in 1871. They had four children: Martha Buettel (Died at age 7 years), Adele E. "Della" Buettel (husband, Frank Randle); Olga A. Buettel (husband, Samuel P. Stormer); & Frank Buettel, Jr. In 1885, he moved his tailor shop to Willows. They moved to Ashland, Oregon where he had a tailor business. He later sold it and they moved back to California, settling in Colusa, where he resumed his tailor business for 16 years. He operated a tailor shop on Market Street. His wife Christianna passed away in 1906. He relocated to Willows, Glenn County resuming his tailor business. He remarried a woman named Anna Marie Heiss. He is a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, Post #110, Colusa. He passed away in Willows at the age of 76 years and is buried in the Colusa Community Cemetery.
