J. W. DENT, KNOX CITY, IS FATALLY INJURED
Aged Harness Man, 73, Struck on Street by Car of C. L. Glasgow, Kirksville, Friday Evening.
IS NOT DRIVERS FAULT
Absolved of Blame by Coroner's Jury at Inquest Saturday Afternoon.

J. W. Dent, harness dealer in Knox City nearly a half century, was fatally injured in the street a few steps from his shop there about 5:40 o'clock Friday evening, when he was struck by an automobile driven by C. L. Glasgow of Kirksville.
Mr. Dent, who would have been 73 years old Saturday of this week, died at 8:20 o'clock Friday evening at Grim-Smith Hospital, Kirksville, where he was rushed in the Seeger ambulance of Knox City.
Mr. Glasgow was absolved of blame in the accident by a coroner's jury at an inquest conducted Saturday afternoon by Mrs. J. W. Hudson of Edina, coroner of Knox County, at the Seeger furniture store in Knox City. The verdict was that Mr. Dent came to his death "by unavoidable accident."
In his testimony Mr. Glasgow, who is a shoe worker, dividing his time between Kirksville and Quincy, said he was on his way home from Quincy. When he reached Knox City from the east, he dimmed his car lights and cut his speed, he said.
Somewhere in the town (the principal business block) he met another automobile with bright lights, which blinded him, he testified. After he had passed the other car, he saw Mr. Dent and tried to avoid hitting him, but could not.
In trying to avoid Mr. Dent, the driver ran into the curbing on the south side of the street, which is State Highway No. 6.
Robert March, Vernie Benner and O. L. Arehart testified as to hearing a crash and of finding Mr. Dent. None of these, however, saw the accident and, it is believed, no one did.
Dr. J. R. Northcutt, Dr. U. Rial McReynolds and Dr. E. J. Phillips, all of whom examined Mr. Dent before he started to the hospital, told of his condition. The testimony of all three was substantially the same.
In general, they said Mr. Dent was unconscious and that his injuries included compound fractures of both legs below the knee, a large wound above the right knee, exposing the knee cap, the left knee apparently crushed and out of place, multiple scalp lacerations and contusions, both hands badly bruised and with the skin torn away and the index finger of the right hand broken.
Dr. Northcutt, who was the first physician on the scene, said he ordered that Mr. Dent be carried into his shop, the key for which was found in his clothing.
The coroner's jury: Lon Ladd, foreman; Robert F. Northcutt, Charles McQuoid, Dr. J. W. Hall, J. B. Hettinger and F. F. Simson.
Funeral services were at 10 o'clock yesterday morning at the St. Joseph Church in Edina by the Rev. Terence Mullins, pastor. Burial was int he old Catholic cemetery by the grave of Mr. Dent's first wife.
Surviving Mr. Dent are a son, James Clyde Dent, Knox City; a sister, Mrs. George Williams, Elmer, Mo.; two brothers, Bernard Dent, La Plata, and Frank Dent, Clovis, N. Mex., and eight grandchildren.
James William Dent was born Nov. 7, 1868, a son of Mr. L. and Susan A. Dent, near La Plata in Macon County, where he was reared.
He married Malinda Wildon about fifty years ago. To them was born the son mentioned as surviving. The family moved to Knox City 47 or 48 years ago and Mr. Dent established himself in the harness business, which he continued to conduct until his death. His first wife died in August, 1895.
Mr. Dent married Mrs. Carrie Daily a number of years ago and she died about five years ago.
