John was a descendant of the colonial immigrants George Abbott and Hannah Chandler, who were married on 12 December 1646 in Roxbury, MA. Born in Hatley, Canada, John married Vermont native Laura Flagg in May 1836. Between the 1820 and 1840 census, Laura's family moved from Clarendon, VT to Stockton, NY, so it's possible John and Laura were married in Chautauqua Co., NY. In 1850, John and Laura were in Rock, Rock Co., WI, and by the 1860 census were in Point Reyes, Marin Co., CA, before settling in Alisal, Monterey County by 1870. John and Laura last appeared nearby in Castroville for the 1880 census. John and Laura were the parents of four known children: Agnes, Alonzo, Julian, and Ortugal.
