Alexander was born in Bourbon County KY and arrived in Missouri when he was a young boy. Mariah Jane Penuel was born in Louisville KY. They married in May 1854 and became parents to ten children.
As a young boy Alexander lived in Paynesville with his parents and one sister on 400 acres.
Alex purchased two tracts of land from the Palmyra MO office of federal land management. He was 26 years old when he bought the first tract of 40 acres in Section 8, Twn 52 R 2 East on August 10, 1849 ,signed with the authorized signature of Zachary Taylor, president of the United States. On March 3, 1853, at age 30, he bought another 77 acres in Section 22, Twn 52 R 1 East. Available census records show that he was probably a farmer throughout his lifetime.

The Clarksville Bicentennial Book (p.24) featured this picture of Mariah Jane Lyter wearing a Civil War-era locket with a picture of her husband who was a Confederate soldier and was later imprisoned for suspicion of harboring Captain Bill Ayers. Further information stated that Mr. Lyter later became a director on the board of the Clarksville High School on Robert Hill following the Civil War.
Interestingly enough when checking Alexander's information on the 1880 census records there was a side note: the "June 1880 (census) determined the resident population of the United Sates to be 50,189,209, an increase of 30.2% over the 1870 census.

In 1914, two years before his death at age 94, there was a recorded last will and testament made by Alexander. He appointed his son Charles as the executor. There appears to be a special provision for his son, Rueben, and Charles was the trustee to oversee the financial support for Reuben's lifetime. Reuben outlived his trustee by 11 years but there were several siblings still living who may have taken over the responsibility.

The Lyters were members of the Presbyterian church for many years. Maria was member of the Eastern Star and Alexander belonged to the Masonic fraternity for more than 60 years.
