HATTIE BAIRD

Mrs. Laban Baird, 57, mother of four sons who entered the armed services in
World War II, died Monday night at the Holy Family hospital. She was moved to
the hospital from her home, 1020 Buffalo street, two weeks ago.
Mrs. Baird, the former Hattie Smith, was born at Oneida, Wis., in 1888 and in
1912 was married to Laban Baird. They moved to Manitowoc 20 years ago. She was
a member of the St. Faiths guild and Altar guild of the St. James Episcopal
church and the Marine band auxiliary.
Survivors are the husband; three sons, Tech. Sgt. Laban, Jr., in Germany, Pvt.
Allen in Florida, and Reginald now at home after discharge from the armed
services; brother, Jonas of Green Bay; two sisters, Mrs. William Williams of
Tulsa, Okla., Mrs. Frank Sommers of Oneida. Another son, Calvin, also in service,
was killed last year in the crash of an army plane in California.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the St. James church,
the Rev. F. C. St. Clair officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
The body may be viewed at the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home after
noon Wednesday, and will be moved to the church at 9 a.m. Thursday. The casket
will be closed at 10:15.
