Mr. Bernard M. Bast, 79, of 1105 Park Row Blvd., Manitowoc, died Friday, January 20,
1989, at Holy Family Medical Center, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be 9:30 am
Monday at Harrigan Parkside Funeral home and 10 am at Holy Innocents Catholic Church,
Manitowoc. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Jeff VandenHeuvel
and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
Mr. Bast was born September 18, 1909 at St. Nazianz, Wisconsin, son of the late Dr.
E. J. and Anna Winter Bast. He married Emily C. Dotey on April 6, 1941 at Napoleon,
Ohio. He attended St. Gregory Grade School and Valders High School. Mr. Bast owned
and operated Bern's Barber Shop in Detroit, Michigan for 30 years, retiring in 1973.
He then moved to Manitowoc. While in Manitowoc, he owned and operated Bast Associates
in School Photography. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Rhineland, Central
Europe with the 63rd Blood and Fire Division, the 862nd Field Artillery Battalion,
Battery A. He served from August, 1943 to November, 1945. One of his major duties in
the Army was to act as a German interpreter. He was a member of the Manitowoc Maritime
Museum; Manitowoc Senior Citizens; AARP; and Holy Innocents Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Emily; a son, David Bast of Manitowoc; a daughter, Sharon
Anna (Michael) Anderson of Madison; five grandchildren, Eric and Rachel Lea Anderson,
Michelle, Laura and Bernie Bast; four sisters-in-law, Laura Ruth Bast, Vangie Bast and
Gertrude Bast of Manitowoc and Winifred Swarthout of Niles, Michigan; nieces, nephews,
two special friends, Debra Bast of Manitowoc and Sue Benzinger of Manitowoc. He was
preceded in death by four brothers, Edward, Fred, Alfred and Vincent Bast.
