His mother died when he was 12. His only child died suddenly of diptheria at 7 yrs. old when he was sent home from school & found dead at the back door, his footprints had not yet filled in from the snow.

He & his wife moved to 414 W. Fair Avenue, Lancaster, her sister, Myrtle Gardner's home after her husband John died in 1938. The three of them served as grandparent figures to niece, Mary Ellen (Moore) Boley's older children during the depression in the 1930-40s, helping with the kids & with several moves during that time. They spent holidays with the Boleys & made homemade gifts for them such as candy & cookies, pajamas, aprons & pot holders.

After Rodney's wife died, he continued to live at her sister's home as they were both were widowed. Before his death, he lived with Mary Ellen's family before going to Long Term Care. He died aged, 87 yr. His father is buried next to them.
