Harry Kroh was born in Osborne, Kansas, on July 30, 1924, and (according to Harry), moved to Pomona, CA when he was 2 years old after hearing that his future wife, Helen, had been born. He joined the Army when he was 18 years old and served as a radio operator in New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan during World War II (March 29, 1943 to February 15, 1946). Returning home and feeling a call "to lead boys in the right direction", he became a Scoutmaster at the age of 22 and continued for 25 years. Harry Kroh received the prestigious Silver Beaver Award by the Boy Scouts of America because of the positive impact he had made on the lives of so many boys and young men. Harry was the Managing Partner at Highland Outfitters, a specialty backpacking and mountaineering store in Riverside, and taught cross-country skiing, backpacking, and winter survival at Riverside City College and the University of California, Riverside. Harry and Helen were married for 63 years, raising their 3 children in Riverside. He loved Perry Mason mysteries, crossword puzzles, and winning (or losing) at cribbage. Harry passed away at home. He was survived by Helen; sons Dave & wife Frances and Steve & wife Maryann, and daughter Vicky; 6 grandchildren: Stephanie, Tim, Chris, Kymberly, Julia & Michael; and 4 great-grandchildren, Andrew, Rylee, Royal & Madyson. (Largely adapted from Press-Enterprise obituary of July 24, 2012.)
