O. Lester Applegate, 86, Sarasota, died April 19, 2003. He was born Jan. 14, 1917, in Maysville, Ky., and came to Sarasota 28 years ago from Scarsdale, N.Y.

He was the former president of Standard Brands. He received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1971 and was active in its alumni association.

He was a 32nd degree Mason for 60 years, and a member of the Scottish Rite and Sahib Shrine Center. He was past treasurer of Sara Bay Country Club and a past board member of the United Service Organization.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ruth D.; a daughter, Ruth A. Hogan of Sarasota; a son, Oral L. Jr. of Mount Desert, Maine; a sister, Leona Jennings of Harrison, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel. A service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel. Entombment will be in Sarasota Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Parkinson's Foundation, 1501 N.W. Ninth Ave., Bob Hope Road, Miami, FL 33136.
