A certified and licensed seaman, Harold worked for many years as a fireman and an oiler as he sailed the great lakes on cargo ships. He left the ships to drive semi for a while and spent 19 years working at Tecumseh Products in New Holstein before retiring in 1985. Harold returned to Door County, where he worked part time making cedar shingles and cutting lumber in a saw mill.
Harold developed a childhood love for horses while working on his father's farm. He raised and trained horses for many years, and shared his love and knowledge of horses with his grandchildren. He operated a pony ring for a while and introduced many young children to horseback riding. An avid hunter, Harold raised and trained hunting dogs, and enjoyed countless hours in the woods with his dogs. He was an avid gardener, and enjoyed woodworking and spending time with friends and family.
Harold is survived by his wife Arlys Miller Graff Staats, and 6 children. Maynard (Carol) Staats of Sturgeon Bay, Ronald (Joan) Staats of Kiel, Sharon (Larry) Wodack of North Fond du Lac, Lynn (Chuck) Sabel of Kiel, Betty (Tom) Ruppenthal of Hilbert, Beverly Lisowe of New Holstein, 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 3 adopted grandchildren, one brother, Earl (Joan) Staats, one sister, Marie Vertz and four sisters-in- law, Irene Graff, Harriet Holtz, Alice Sorbel & Rose Staats. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Lloyd and Ernest Staats, brothers- in- law, Clarence Vertz, Roy Graff, Harold Holst, Robert Steinle, sister- in- law, Eunice Steinle, his mother-in-law and father- in- law, Paul and Edith Graff, one grandchild, Connie Wodack, one great grandchild, Alexis Braun, and one adopted grandchild, Russell Dietsche.
Funeral services for Harold will be held at 12:00 noon, Friday, July 27, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 387 Cemetery Road, Kiel, WI. with Rev. David Laabs officiating.Burial will take place in the Kiel City Cemetery.
