John Frederick Stevenhagen, 90, of New Franklin, passed away on Saturday, July 21, under hospice care, surrounded by family.

John was born on January 8, 1922 in Akron to Jacobus Stevenhagen and Anna Van Schelt. He graduated from Hower Vocational High School and served as a navigator in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II where he earned the nickname "Snuffy." After the war, he met and wed Patricia Alexander in Dallas, Texas. He began working in construction after returning to Akron, building homes and commercial buildings in the area for the next 45 years.

Funny and generous with an ornery streak, John was a friend to many and a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He loved red hats, walking his land, and lunch with his Burger King friends. He always had a song in his heart.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 62 years, Patricia; daughters, Karen and Pam; son and caregiver, Lad; grandchildren, David (Khadija), Molly, and Allison Airhart and Jacqueline Kell; great-granddaughter, Layla Airhart; and many nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by family and friends.

His family would like to express thanks to the staff at Barberton Hospital for their care and kindness. They would also like to thank their neighbors for their help and support, particularly the Les Lucas family.

John donated his body to science. In remembrance of John and in celebration of his life, his family suggests committing an act of kindness for someone or chasing a goose.
