Obituary

"Oli" as Viola was affectionately called as she was growing up had a special zest for being outdoors with her father. She was a "tom boy" and loved helping out around the farm, becoming an expert horseman. At twelve when not needed at home, she recalled being at work at 6:00 a.m. at their neighbour's place, Bill Bullock Sr. She harnessed her own six horse team and worked alongside the men.
When she was very young, she remembers sneaking out at night to ride her favourite pony without saddle or bridle, standing on the horses back bare footed.
The family loved music and sang as Grandma Schmidt played the piano. Mom brought her love of music to our family and music was a part of family gatherings, travelling, and nights at home.
On February 16, 1935 Viola married Clifford and started raising a family. Times were tough, and mom told of having seven letters written but no money for the stamps. With hard work and much love the family grew and prospered.
About 1941 Douglas Miller became our Ward teacher and through his diligence the family became active and mom joined the church. This began her long devoted service. She worked about 10 years in Primary as the Trekker Leader and was a "Second" Mom to many of "her boys". Along with nephews and nieces and friends, they spent much of their summers at our place.
Mom was always involved in church as teacher, canning chairman, etc., and spent 12 years in 4 Relief Society Presidencies.
She was also a favourite at church, community and especially family functions, with her many many recitations. As we worked together she would help pass the hours with her recitations and stories.
At night she always read "Hulbert's" Stories of the bible. We would beg "Just one more, please one more"; usually she'd give in about 10 or more times.
Viola was an extraordinary cook, and the aroma of cooking turkey, new spuds and peas, chicken, carrots, beef, etc. abounded always-not only on special occasions. Most of the items used, she raised or grew in her large garden. In the summer and the fall, the fragrances of her meals invaded the field as she brought piping hot meals out to the fields so the farm work could progress as fast as possible. Viola loved God and her fellow man, whom she loved to serve. Her home and heart was always open to everyone, we thank God for her.
